In the early months of the year, it is hard to imagine your garden will ever be in full bloom again. So when the dark, grey days get too much for you, why not make plans to add some vibrant Summer colour to your garden with Summer-flowering bulbs.
Summer-flowering bulbs add big impact to any garden, providing fabulous colour and impressive flowers, and they can be used in beds, borders and containers too!
Dahlias
Among the traditional favourites are the fabulous colours and shapes of the dahlia. Ranging in size from dwarf varieties to those with flowers the size of dinner plates, they also offer a choice of shapes including cactus, pompom and anemone-type flowers. They are easy to grow and plant, and provide masses of flowers for months on end. They can be planted in pots for versatile, portable displays, or dot them around in your borders to add that extra zing.
Lilies
Dramatic, statuesque, flamboyant… all of these can be used to describe the wonderful and highly scented blooms of the lily. With varieties in a range of single and multi-colours, with stripes and spots and bowl, trumpet, star or funnel-shaped flowers, there can be little doubt that these boast a diversity of display which is hard to beat.
They are easy to grow, so you can add impact to your borders or create an eye-catching feature on a patio with a collection of pots… but wherever you choose to grow your lilies, you can be sure they’ll put on a dazzling show!
Begonias
Begonias are one of the most rewarding Summer plants – flowering profusely from June to October with an amazing selection of varieties and colours available. Like the dahlia they are also extremely versatile and can be planted on balconies, in hanging baskets, containers and beds.
The extravagant double begonias are particularly suitable for flower beds and containers, while the pendula begonias are ideal in hanging baskets or containers with other cascading plants.
