Success with Poinsettias starts with where they originate from – and that’s somewhat warmer that it is here in Britain! And because they love a nice warm environment, it will come as no surprise that these are not plants which can tolerate long-distance travel, or any spell in a cold delivery lorry or storage department. To this end it’s always best to buy your poinsettia sourced from a reputable grower, so you can be confident that all the plant’s needs will have been considered from the start.
Our Poinsettias in-store are all UK grown from known suppliers and when you take one home you’ll need to…
position them good light, keep them away from draughts and keep the environment constant.
- keep them between 60F-70F.
- allow the surface of the compost to dry out between watering, and then water thoroughly using tepid water.
- avoid placing them in hot, stuffy conditions – and a humid atmosphere will prolong their life, so place the pot on a pebble tray.
And don’t worry if your poinsettia starts wilting, as it is possible to revive them by soaking the root ball in warm water – and this should start happening within an hour so you won’t have long to wait to see if your rescue remedy has worked!
Once you’ve invested in a poinsettia, if you can provide suitable growing conditions then it’s always worth trying to maintain them. After flowering, cut the stems to half their length, then feed every 14 days when new growth begins and re-pot as necessary.
These are beautiful plants, and come in a range of colours – all available in store now!
